About Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo sits against the Karamoja escarpment on Uganda's border with South Sudan and Kenya — 220 km of rough road from the nearest town, which is exactly why it stays this empty. Cheetah, which don't occur in Uganda's other parks, are resident here, alongside bat-eared fox, ostrich and a buffalo and elephant population that moves across genuinely open, mountain-ringed savannah rather than dense bush.
The valley floor gives Kidepo the widest, longest sightlines of any Ugandan park — herds visible from kilometres away against a backdrop of Mount Morungole and the Napore range. Apoka, the park's only real base, sits on a rise looking out over the whole basin.
Because so few visitors make the trip, game drives here feel private in a way that's hard to find elsewhere in East Africa; the Karamojong homesteads and cattle culture of the surrounding region add a very different texture to the visit than Uganda's forest parks.
